I never know what to do for my girlfriend’s birthday because we just have such different interests. Last year we went to the zoo which she absolutely loved – but I just found it boring! Despite the fact that she had a great time she was also aware that I wasn’t enjoying the day that much and I think it put a downer on the whole thing to be honest! I tried my best to make it seem like I was enjoying myself but she knows that I don’t like animals and she remembered me saying a few months before that I hated zoos!
This year I decided that the best thing to do was to ask her what she thought she might like to do, but when I approached her about it, she was adamant that she wanted a surprise! She didn’t care what it was that we did, she just wanted to do something I had thought of! As time passes ,people begin to desire new ways of doing things. This is because people are increasingly becoming more enlightened and as it happens the old ways of doing things become primitive and unpleasant. Sometimes it is just that people are tired of old things and desire something to take away the boredom they bring.
It is for the same reason that music must change or evolve to conform to these changes in what is desired. If this fails to happen there is the danger of old music style getting abandoned. Where the new forms are not invented the people face the danger of losing their music identity. In Jamaica, reggae music never got abandoned. It only evolved. Hence when one listens to today’s forms of Jamaican music he still can hear elements that link them to the old styles such as ska, rude boys, rock steady and the peak of Jamaican music Roots and Culture that remains the axis of the Caribbean Island’s music In the US, it is still easy to perceive the interrelationship between the old styles and what prevails today. This means that music forms over there are never abandoned. They only change gradually with time. This is also true of South Africa and music from central Africa such as Makossa and sukooz. Hence the music has remained part of the lives of the people in these parts of the world.
In Nigeria it is difficult to say that this is true. Nigeria has some of the richest genres of music known around the world. These of course, are Highlife, Juju and Fuji. Rather than evolve Nigerian music seemed to have experienced jumps so that one cannot draw a link between what was played then and what is being played now. A surviving octogenarian Highlife musician, the Rolling Dollars, once explained that the comatose state of Highlife music was caused by the civil war between 1967 and 1970. This is doubtful. Highlife musicians just continued to play the old thing without changing and this is largely responsible for the near death state of the music As people were becoming educated and life styles were changing, the music failed to change along with the evolving culture. Thus the Nigerian music fans started looking outwards for music satisfaction. At the time, Disco just came handy.
To bring about the evolution of Highlife music to produce a modern version of it will demand a careful study of the music to identify the primitive-sounding elements of the music and then refining them to meet the music needs of today.
Music evolution is a process and not an event. This is because life styles will always change and since music is an extension of the culture of the people, it has to change too. Only then can people relate with the music and the music endures, percolating down to later generations.

Don’t you get frustrated with the system of unwritten rules that restrict the “proper” use of music in worship? Who wrote those rules, anyway? I can hear the Spirit of God laugh as we poor human build our cages out of fear and ignorance, and say, “Stay in there!” These are meant to be funny (Come on, they’re a little funny.) but also thought-provoking and even liberating.
1. The only hymns that should be sung in worship are the old ones, the ones “we” learned as children. (Note: Was the writer of Psalm 96 wrong? At one time ALL hymns, anthems, and other pieces of music were new.)
2. All church music should be quiet. (Note: Most lovers of traditional hymns would disagree with this. Would singing Joy To The World at a volume barely above a whisper have the same triumphant impact?)
3. The only appropriate church instruments are the pipe organ, the piano on occasion, and the Hammond drawbar – but only in dire circumstances. (Note: Our ancestors in faith used a wide variety of instrumentation to accompany their singing [see Psalm 92 and others]; Christians in most world cultures continue to do the same today. All right, the Martians haven’t caught on, but they’re the exception.)
4. All church music should be serious and classical in style. (Note: Psalm 95? Singing with “a joyful noise” sounds neither serious nor classical.)
5. All church music should be complex, performable by only highly trained musicians. (Note: Our ancestors in faith of African-American traditions composed a powerful body of spirituals that continue to stir and inspire the Christian soul; yet these songs are accessible to people with little musical expertise.)

Condoleeza Rice and the Chamber Music Effect

Last month I read a news item in the New York Times, describing the devotion that Condoleeza Rice, our current Secretary of State who has been on a mission to promote the Iraqui war, has to playing the piano with a weekly chamber music group. Being a violist myself, and a regular in my own amateur chamber music circuit, I was, quite frankly, surprised. I know that is a strong word, but the story almost came across as an oxymoron–Condoleeza Rice and chamber music in the same sentence?
For me, playing chamber music is pretty close to sacred–or at least special in an intimate and spiritual and listening and cooperating sort of way. Actually, in my smugger and more idealistic moments, I have even believed that playing chamber music holds the key to future peace in the world. Yes. Seriously…
Which brings me back to Condoleeza Rice. I hear that she plays well; beautifully in fact, with sensitivity and a good ear. It takes a lot of practice–and I mean a lot–to be a good chamber music player. First there is the sheer mastery of your own individual instrument. And then there is learning your unique part. Only after that comes listening, looking, feeling, sensing the subtle, but powerful nuances of rhythm, intonation, dynamics, phrasing, the breath… It is such an organism, a chamber music group and the piece of music being played. By its very nature, chamber music playing requires give and take, listening, compassion, courage, intuition and hard work.
There is no doubt in my mind that Ms. Rice is intelligent, talented and a very hard worker. But how is it possible to hear the pathos of a Beethoven piano trio, the depths of despair and longing, the agony of dissonance, and warm comfort in the resolution of that final chord–without also hearing the screams of civilians bombed, and feeling the terror of families made homeless by GI’S following the orders from her generals “to bomb”.
I know, she didn’t actually say “bomb” those people, but that is my point. Anyone who appreciates chamber music and especially those who play it, gets how the theme has variations, and that it can sneak in at the most unexpected moments, and that it gets traded off by different members of the group, in each of their solos and duets. In other words, every member of the group is responsible for the outcome, and each voice is integral to the entire system.
If Condoleeza Rice only got that her voice, like her piano, is integral to the system, and any change in one part, automatically affects the other parts and can lead to a completely different outcome…
Which brings me back to the chamber music effect. I say, put down your arms, and pick up your cellos. Even a scratchy, untrained string player sounds way sweeter to me than a gunshot.
And then it’s only a beginning, not an end.

BBC’s Decision to Axe 6 Music

Today, the 11th of March 2010 is the 8th birthday of the BBC digital radio station, 6 Music. In a few days we will hear if the plans to axe the station will go ahead and I thought I’d share my thoughts with you.
I have always been a supporter of the BBC and the license fee. It is still true that the BBC is the envy of the world for its broadcasting. However if this decision goes ahead, the one thing that the beeb stands for; i.e originality will die.
The point of the BBC is to provide content that is unmatched by the commercial sector.
If you analyse many of the BBC’s stations, this clearly is not the case. Radio 1’s playlist is obviously found everywhere in commercial radio. Ditto Radio 2 and 3. When it comes to TV, the BBC’s most recent channel, BBC3’s content can be found everywhere from E4 to Dave & Bravo. Indeed, BBC3 is just competion for the aforementioned channels.
6 Music on the other hand along with radio 4 is totally unique. There is content that you will not hear anywhere else in the commercial sector. There is material that you won’t hear anywhere else in the whole world, let alone the UK! This isn’t an exaggeration. Last week I was listening to 1960’s Brazillian psychedilia!
Not that I’m into that…but that’s not the point. Where else in the world could I ever hope to hear a retrospective on 60’s Brazillian psychedelia?…Nowhere except BBC 6 Music.
It is a fact that 6 Music is the only BBC station whose listening figures have consitently increased every year since its start, 8 years ago.
It is also a fact that if 6 Music were on FM and not DAB, its audience would be much larger than radio 3, 5 Live and any of the regional county radio stations, all of who enjoy FM status.
It seems to me that if 6 Music is to go we will lose the very heart and soul of the BBC with it. The bedrock of originality and excellence that it has always stood on will crumble and we will be left thinking that if they are prepared to do this, who will be next?
