An Overview of Winter Olympic Skiing Events

Are you a skiing fan? If so, you’ll be happy to hear that the 2010 Winter Olympic games are just around the corner. Let’s talk about some of the skiing events that will take place. Generally speaking, skiing is one of the most highly watched sports in the Olympics. Figure skating has a tendency to grab a lot of headlines, but a really large number of people spend time following a sport they might do themselves on the winter weekend — skiing.

Here is a quick overview of the skiing events that will be held:

* Alpine Skiing

This is perhaps some of the most challenging skiing that you’ll see taking place at the Olympics. Athletes are required to do some very grueling maneuvers in an effort to stay on the course.

* Cross Country Skiing

You better be in good shape if you hope to compete in this event! Here you’ll see less jumping and stunts and more endurance and horsepower.

* Freestyle Skiing

May the best acrobat on skis win! You’ll see a lot of participants performing maneuvers that you typically only see gymnasts doing — except these people are on skis!

* Nordic Combined

This is a combination of cross-country skiing and ski jumping. It’s not for the faint of heart or anyone else who isn’t in both excellent shape AND that possesses nerves of steel.

* Ski Jumping

Have you ever wanted to race down a sheet of ice and be flung into the air at break neck speeds? If so, then ski jumping is the sport for you! This sport is probably the most iconic skiing related sport in the Olympics. Crashes are rare, but they do happen, and they can be spectacular.

Regardless of whether or not you are somebody who enjoys winter sports, there is little doubt that you will enjoy watching Olympic skiing events. Some people actually watch these events because they know there is a high likelihood that participants will crash into one another, fall or simply spin out of control. Stay tuned, these events are coming to a television screen near you very soon.
