When a small child draws a picture of a house, he or she usually draws a square shaped bottom half and triangular top. The square bottom represents walls built out of wooden studs and wooden trusses are the frame for the triangle top. This is the norm; this is what children and most adults understand. The traditional home in the United States is made of wood. Wood is in the walls and in the roof. For years wood has been the material of choice to construct homes because it was not overly expensive, provides decent strength, and has been easy to use.
As modern technologies offer us new ways to construct residential homes we must question the use of wood as the main construction component. By developing better ways to manufacture cement, and by making cement easier to use in the creation of walls, contractors can now build homes that are almost entirely made of concrete. No, the traditional cement wall is not replacing the traditional wood wall because by using insulated concrete forms (ICF) contractors give their customers a new type of wall that is strong and saves a great deal of energy. Contractors are able to take an ICF block, stack it on top of another one and pour the wet cement creating a new and improved cement wall.
The foam blocks that are stacked together create a steel reinforced concrete wall that is very well insulated. Literally, the ICF concrete wall starts as a foam wall, resembling a large Lego set. The foam wall is hollow in the middle leaving room for the cement and steel reinforcing. After the cement is poured into the middle and dries, it is permanently bonded to the foam. A super strong insulated cement wall is much better than a traditional cement or wood wall.
This ICF concrete construction technique can be used to create any style of home. A contractor can use a new and better way to construct a home, and give the homeowner a home that will fit into his or her chosen neighborhood. The versatility of the insulated concrete wall is the final reason why it is better than other types of traditional walls, concrete or wood.
